Looking Fabulous at 40, 50 and beyond!

Recently I spent a delightful afternoon doing a colour consultation with a group of lovely ladies. One lady was using this occasion to celebrate her 40th birthday with great excitement and optimism at having reached this landmark age.

This made me think about how my own 40th birthday is looming and over the years I’ve been dreading getting there. But why? I’ve been lucky and inherited some very kind genes that keep me in good shape. I’ve also taken care of myself and on the inside I still feel like I’m 23 years old – 23 was a wonderful time in my life so I’m staying there mentally.

Watching the recent Kylie Minogue show also reminded me that Kylie herself will be 40 next year – Kylie and I share the same birthday year and month, so I’ve always regarded us as cosmic twins. So there was Kylie dancing and singing up a storm and during one number, riding a bucking bronco wearing nothing but fishnets and a corset.

Well that’s alright for Kylie you might say but it’s not ok for me and you’re absolutely right. It seems to me that retaining a youthful image isn’t about dressing like a teenager it’s more about dressing to suit your personality and your lifestyle. Kylie certainly doesn’t feel like she’s too old for the fishnets, in fact in order to stay at the top of her game, it’s probably a necessity.  For me, staying youthful is about taking a regular look at your image and refreshing it by continuously injecting interesting new touches to update your look.

Here are my top tips on how to stay looking youthful at any age:

Review your hairstyle and colour at least once a year – our skin tone and face shape changes as we get older. You only have to look at the newly reformed Spice Girls to see just how different their face shapes look now to when they first shot to fame. Get some advice from your hairdresser about what style and colours will suit you best. Try changing the parting of your hair or adding a fringe to give you a fresher look without making radical changes.

Add one new trend to your wardrobe each season – whether it be the current season’s colour trend or a new piece of jewellery, add one thing each new season to update your overall look. You can have some real fun with this, experimenting and discovering what suits you best without being a slave to fashion.

Find out what colours make you look sensational – life is too short to look anything less than gorgeous and the colours we wear can have the biggest impact on making us look radiantly beautiful. Visit my website www.stylespecialists.co.uk for more information about a personalised colour consultation.

Keep your makeup simple – less is definitely more. Learn how to make your best features stand out. Emphasise either your eyes or your lips, never both at the same time!

If it feels wrong then it probably is – if you don’t feel confident enough to wear a certain garment, skirt length or neckline, then it’s not right for you. If you feel good wearing something then you’ll radiate that confidence to others.

Reaching a significant age is a milestone to be celebrated because in this day and age we still, quite literally, have our whole lives ahead of us.

If you set out to make the very best of yourself, then you’re highly likely to succeed in looking and feeling your very best….and you’re so worth it!
